Police in Kakamega County have launched investigations into a bizarre death of two children suspected to have eaten contaminated githeri.
11 others have been admitted at Webuye Referral Hospital in Bungoma County.
Family members who witnessed the incident said one child died instantly while the other passed on minutes after he had been rushed to the hospital.
The githeri, a combination of maize and beans cooked together is said to have been prepared by the children’s grand mother.
Dr Rainne Juma, a physician at Webure Referral hosptial said the other children aged between one and 10 years, were admitted to the hospital with stomach upsets, diarrhoea and vomiting, “but their situation is under control.
Although investigations into a possible cause of food poisoning is underway, the family said that the grandmother prepared githeri for breakfast and ate it together with the children.
She then left for church only to be alerted by neighbors of the ill fated children.
