Climate actors call for funds to enact climate change policies and implementation

Migori county civil society organizations have asked the county government to roll out a robust climate change implementation plan, a move that will help them fast-track and monitor the steps they make in realizing the set goals.

Mr Titus Orwa, the secretary general of the Civil Society Organisation in Migori County said that there is an urgent need for the government to lay down well-structured climate change implementation plans.

“We need the implementation plan to be shared with us as quickly as possible because the absence of the plan makes us work in the dark.” Said Mr Orwa.

Mr Orwa also noted the need to roll out funds to civil society organizations to help them boost their efforts towards ensuring the ecological balance through climate change activities.

The grievances come just days after the Lake Region Economic Bloc summit held in Migori county resolved to major on climate action to enable the member counties to achieve positive climate changes that would ensure increased agricultural production.

These actions which according to the summit resolution, will be achieved through the formation of ward climate action committees according to the civil societies, should ensure that the committee’s actions adhere to the set laws and climate change policy act.

As a CSOs who also advocates for climate change, Mr Orwa said that their work has been made easy by the fact that there is a chain link that connects their activities to the ward level.

According to Mr Titus, factoring the information relating to climate change acts, supported by the climate change funds which were recently enacted by the county government will boost the efforts to make the climate habitable.

Apart from the climate change mitigation, civil society organizations also run charity services especially connecting graduate students to get employed.

“We have recommended as civil societies registered and operating within Migori County to absorb the unemployed graduates with degrees and diplomas with a view to identification of the rate of unemployment and subsequently secure support for them.” Said Mr Orwa.

According to Ms Nancy Ng’ong’a, a project manager at DaCCA, their success in mitigating climate change in the county has been boosted by including the youth from the ward level in their activities.

Ms Nancy notes the importance of youth involvement as it has enabled the organization to gain momentum noting that the youth has the energy to propel the objectives.

This has been made possible by ensuring that the youth get to know what is expected of them in the climate change struggle, as she notes, information is power.

“We make the youth understand what is expected of them when the climate change policy will be implemented, the quality of the project and the need to hit the target in climate change policy implementation.” Said Ms Nancy.

While the youth form an integral part in climate change policy implementation monitoring, civil societies note that the media plays an even better platform to air out their role in the change.

Ms Nancy noted that the media has been an interlink that connects the societies and development partners to the communities, by explaining in depth, the importance of climate change.

However, the civil societies have admitted the difference in the climate of the different parts of the county, making it to roll out a uniform climate change policy, adding that the reluctance of the communities to embrace the organizations has been a challenge.
