The county’s efforts to ensure controlled land use in Urban centers of Turkana gained a major boost following the completion of draft Spatial plans for the Katilu, Lokiriama, and Kalobeyei areas.
At a meeting, the draft Spatial plans for the three Urban centres were shared with a section of the County Assembly members for their approval.
The Spatial plans were developed by consultants with guidance from the Directorate of Physical Planning over a period of six months.
Prior to meeting the County Assembly, the Directorate of Physical Planning together with the consultants engaged the public over the Spatial plans for their approval.
Director for Physical Planning, Davies Munialo, explained that the plans will guide the development of the three major towns for a period of ten years, aligned to the 2022-2032 master Spatial plan for Turkana.
Additionally, the Spatial plans will form the basis for the preparation of cadastral maps, an important document for the future processing of title deeds.
The move by the county sets the stage for empowering Katilu, Lokiriama, and Kalobeyei to create mechanisms for resolving conflicts arising out of competing land use patterns and, to undertake protection of fragile ecosystems moving forward.
The Spatial plans have demarcated areas for agricultural production, pastoralism, town centers and service offices, public social amenities, roads and passageways, and land for possible expansion as anticipated by the globally accepted Urban planning practice.
