Multi agency team keen on eradicating illicit brew, drugs in Migori County

Migori County Commissioner Mr David Gitonga has reiterated his multi agency team’s  commitment to stump out  illicit liquor and drug trafficking in the county.

The administrator on Wednesday led a multi agency meeting with security stakeholders in talks aimed at formalizing and strengthening the teams on the fight against illicit brew and hard drugs.

“The main aim of today’s meeting is to formalize and strengthen the multi agency team on the fight against the illicit brews and other substances which are abused in the county. The fight against drug and substance abuse is a long chain program coordinated by President Ruto through the county security personnel,” Mr Gitonga said.

He said that the  meeting was “a follow up of the meeting that we had with president Ruto at his Karen residence where a directive to permanently deal with this lion in the house took center stage.”

Since the onset of this campaign, the administrator observed that they have already  nabbed 60kilograms of Bhang , 92,000 litres of Kangara (fermented brew) and 10,000 litres of Chang’aa(illicit brew)..

In the same spirit, he added that already the county security team has netted 92 people and closed over 30 Chang’aa dens.

“Our coordinated efforts to end this malicious acts of dealing in illegal business has so far led to arrest of 92 people and closure of 30 illegal joints,” he said.

The follow up meeting took place, a day after a vehicle hired to transport Bhang across the Tanzania – Kenya border was flagged down.

“In this spirit to make this county a drug free zone, we recently nabbed a vehicle ferrying bhang from Tanzania to Kenya,” he said.

He dedicated the success to the well coordinated program from the top county security to the division level,” said Gitonga.

He called on members of the public to volunteer information on “any form of suspicion” to help bolster the county’s security while also lauding those who have leaked information to them.

In the meeting was also the National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBs) and Anti Counterfeits and County government officials.
