ODM Calls for Release of Political Parties Fund Amid Funding Crisis

In a decisive move, the Central Management Committee of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) convened today to address the ongoing funding crisis plaguing the party.

The Committee, serving as the apex decision-making body, expressed grave concerns over the deliberate withholding of funds by the Kenya Kwanza regime, a move they assert is aimed at crippling opposition parties.

Speaking at the meeting, ODM leader Raila Odinga underscored the critical importance of the Political Parties Fund, established to bolster democracy by facilitating active political participation and supporting party activities.

However, they lamented that the fund has been manipulated to stifle opposition voices, with the current government channeling resources disproportionately to favored parties.

“The government’s refusal to release funds to political parties undermines the very essence of democracy,” remarked ODM party leader, highlighting the adverse effects on essential party functions, including the organization of grassroots elections.

Despite the funding challenges, the Committee resolved to forge ahead with the scheduled grassroots elections, signaling a firm commitment to grassroots democracy and party rejuvenation.

The elections are set to commence on April 27th, 2024, with staggered dates across various counties:

  • April 27th: Kwale, Busia, and Siaya Counties
  • April 29th: Kajiado, Migori, and Wajir Counties
  • April 30th: Kisii and Vihiga Counties

This decision underscores ODM’s unwavering determination to uphold democratic principles and engage with its grassroots base, even in the face of adversity.

As tensions mount over the funding impasse, political observers anticipate heightened scrutiny on the government’s handling of political party finances and its commitment to fostering a vibrant multi-party democracy in Kenya.

The ODM Central Management Committee’s call for the immediate release of the Political Parties Fund resonates as a clarion call for transparency, accountability, and the preservation of democratic values in the country.
