A total of 25 learners who missed school after the official reporting days due to fee challenges could now smile after receiving sponsorship from the Tusome Tujiinue scholarship program.
The scholarship program is an initiative of Urir Member of Parliament Mark Nyamitta.
The 25 students were part of a bigger group of 131,854 who were still waiting to start secondary school.
According to info from the Ministry of Education, only 1,268,180 students had started Form One by January 26.
Charles Nyariaro, Uriri NG-CDF Chair, explained they picked these students by visiting their homes all around the constituency.
The scholarship program started in 2018, a year after Nyamita became MP, and it’s been supporting students all the way to Form 4.
William Mbeche, Uriri Constituency Manager, shared that they chose one student from each of the 22 areas.
The program has been doing well with an 85% success rate, and Mbeche thinks the 2024 group will do even better.
He outlined that this year, they changed things up a bit.
Instead of picking students with less than 300 marks, they chose those who scored 300 marks and above.
This shift aims at helping all high-achieving students. He said.
