Members of Migori County Assembly have elected a new speaker two days after ousting embattled speaker Boaz Okoth.
In the proceedings supervised by Deputy Speaker Mathews Chacha, Mr George Duro, Maccalder Kanyarwanda Member of County Assembly, was voted unopposed.
The motion to elect a new speaker was tabled by Graham Kagali member of South Kanyamkago Ward and seconded by Hevrone Mairah of Muhuru ward.
All the 41 Members of County Assembly present voted in Duro as their house new speaker.
“It is an honour given to me by honourable members to guide this house. I will discharge my duties in accordance with the provision of the Constitution,” said Duro.
After his unanimous election on Thursday 10, Mr Duro gave a firm assurance to restore sanity and the image of the assembly that had been tarnished over years.
According to the MCAs, the decisions were arrived at after the deputy speaker Mr Chacha, declined to fill the position of the house speaker in an acting capacity.
The new house speaker Mr Duro, is expected to take charge of the assembly’s leadership with immediate effect for the remaining six months.
Mr Duro’s new role in an acting capacity, however, will not affect in any way his role as the Macalder Kanyarwanda ward MCA.
He affirmed his commitment to restoring sanity at the assembly and put to task the executive wing of the county government.
Addressing the press after the voting session, the MCAs said it was high time to bring back sanity at the assembly.
They decried of that the houses reputation had been soiled by innumerable setbacks stemming from poor oversight of the speaker
A section of MCA’s accused the ousted speaker of continually using uncouth and devious means to run the house, causing divisions.
” We could not tolerate what he did at the assembly finance offices. His actions brought shame to the House,” Condoned South Sakwa MCA, Ken Ongoro.
He added that their earlier efforts to eliminate the Speaker had been hindered by his allies in the house.
However, the changes did not end at the top.
Momentarily after the election of the George Reagan Duro, House Members of various coalitions held meetings to elect their representatives to the new Migori County Assembly Service board.
The position of the Majority Coalition was given to Ken Ouma Ooro, a member of South Sakwa Ward whereas that of Minority Coalition went to Nicholas Rioba of Tagare ward.
In the Women Caucus representation, Grace Odhiambo, a Nominated MCA was considered to assume the role.
The news changes will see the Independents represented by Christopher Odira Onanda of Suna Central Ward.
The MCAs said they are optimistic that the new change of guard will redeem the image of County Upper House.
