Artisanal miners launch first-ever SACCO in Turkana North to boost economic empowerment

Artisanal miners in Turkana North have taken a historic step toward economic empowerment with the formation of Jatann Cooperative Society Limited, the first SACCO dedicated to artisanal miners in the area and beyond.

The cooperative formally received its registration certificate from the Directorate of Cooperatives and Marketing during a ceremony officiated by County Executive for Trade, Enterprise Development, and Cooperative Management, Roseline Aite.

Jatann Cooperative joins a growing network of SACCOs in Turkana, with more than 65 cooperative societies established recently in various sectors of the economy as part of the county government’s broader strategy to promote economic empowerment and resilience through cooperative models.

Following its registration, Jatann Cooperative held its inaugural general meeting, during which members approved key operational structures including the appointments of and the election of SACCO officials.

Additionally, members approved the 2025 budget and formed a four-member supervisory committee to oversee governance and financial accountability.

Addressing the new SACCO, CECM Roseline Aite congratulated members on their milestone, underscoring the importance of teamwork and sound leadership in achieving sustainable growth.

“With this registration, you are now a legally recognized entity, empowered to recruit members and engage in cooperative business activities. The success of this SACCO will depend on your ability to work together and uphold strong leadership,” she said.

Director of Cooperatives and Marketing, Shemmy Ebulon, assured members of the county’s commitment to supporting Jatann Cooperative in its formative stages, particularly in membership growth, capital expansion, and legal compliance.

“Our goal as a directorate is to ensure that newly formed SACCOs thrive. We are ready to offer technical support to help you meet your objectives and become a model cooperative in the mining sector,” she stated.

According to Director Shemmy Ebulon, the launch of Jatann Cooperative Society Limited is expected to unlock new opportunities for artisanal miners in Lolupe and beyond

“It is our hope that those engaged in the mining industry will join this Sacco or even form others so as to enjoy access to financial services, collective bargaining power, and improved market linkages for their gold trade,” Director Shemmy Ebulon said.

The launch of the new SACCO was witnessed by coperative officers James Akorot (sub county), Judy Ekitela and Ekipor Sofari.
