Beyond the Myths: Empowering Young People Through Family Planning

Teenage pregnancy remains a significant challenge in Migori County, with 19% of all pregnancies in 2023 involving adolescents.

To address this issue, health practitioners are promoting family planning methods, which have seen a positive impact, increasing contraceptive usage from 61% to 69% in two years.

However, the uptake of family planning methods is hindered by widespread stigma and misconceptions.

Many believe these methods can lead to health complications, infertility, and even promote sexual immorality.

Irene Oyuga, a health practitioner at Midoti Health Facility, emphasizes the safety and effectiveness of family planning methods.

She highlights the importance of education and awareness campaigns to dispel myths and encourage responsible family planning practices

By training health providers and integrating family planning services, the county aims to reduce maternal deaths and empower young people to make informed choices about their reproductive health.
