In light of the recent rise in road accidents, particularly those involving students following the closure of schools, the Boda Boda and Tuk Tuk Cooperative Union of Kenya is urging its members to prioritize safety, discipline, and responsibility on the roads ahead of the Easter holidays.
Over the past few weeks, a worrying spate of accidents has claimed multiple lives, including those of young students traveling home after the school term ended.
Several of these incidents have involved boda bodas (motorcycles) and tuk tuks (three-wheelers), which remain a popular means of transport due to their affordability and accessibility.
Unfortunately, cases of reckless riding, overspeeding, and underage operation of motorcycles have contributed to this alarming trend.
A recent accident in Thika Road, where a speeding boda boda ferrying two students collided with a vehicle, resulted in fatalities, highlighting the urgent need for strict adherence to road safety measures.
In another incident in Kayole, a schoolboy lost his life after attempting to operate a motorcycle without proper training or a valid license. These cases, according to the union paints growing safety concerns surrounding boda bodas and tuk tuks, particularly during peak travel seasons such as school closures and festive holidays.
Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi, the Union’s Chairperson expressed deep concern over the loss of lives and urged boda boda and tuk tuk operators to exercise greater caution.
“We are saddened by the recent accidents that have claimed the lives of innocent students and other road users. As a sector, we must uphold discipline, integrity, and professionalism in our operations. We urge all our members to avoid overspeeding, reckless riding, and dangerous maneuvers that put passengers at risk,” the Chairperson stated.
The Union also emphasized the need for parental responsibility, cautioning parents and guardians against allowing underage children to operate motorcycles and tuk tuks.
Additionally, they called upon law enforcement agencies to enhance road surveillance and take stern action against reckless riders and those permitting unlicensed individuals—especially minors—to operate these vehicles.
“While we urge all road users to adhere to safety regulations, we also call upon relevant security enforcers to intensify monitoring and curb reckless riding. Underage use of motorcycles and three-wheelers by students is a growing concern that must be urgently addressed,” read part of the statement.
Furthermore, the Union appealed to the government for support in streamlining the sector through proper training and registration of operators.
They emphasized the need for structured training programs to equip riders with essential skills and knowledge to enhance safety on the roads.
The Boda Boda and Tuk Tuk Cooperative Union of Kenya remains committed to ensuring that all operators adhere to road safety guidelines while fostering a culture of professionalism and accountability in the industry.
As the Easter holidays approach, the Union urges all boda boda and tuk tuk riders, passengers, and other road users to prioritize safety and work collectively to prevent further tragedies.
