For Omollo, the founder and chairperson of Sustainable Village Resources (SVR), every basket of freshly picked coffee tells a story of patience, resilience and harmony with nature.
“Months of nurturing, pruning and caring for these trees have finally borne fruit. Every ripe cherry harvested represents the dedication of our farmers and the promise of exceptional coffee,” he says.
Unlike conventional coffee farms that rely heavily on chemical fertilisers and pesticides, Omollo’s farm operates as a thriving ecosystem. Coffee grows beneath carefully managed layers of indigenous trees, fruit trees, bananas, nitrogen-fixing plants and ground cover crops, each performing a specific ecological function.
The approach, known as syntropic farming, mimics the structure and regenerative processes of a natural forest. Instead of exhausting the soil, the system continually rebuilds it through organic matter generated from regular pruning and natural decomposition.
The result is fertile soils rich in microbial life, improved water retention and healthier coffee plants capable of withstanding increasingly unpredictable weather patterns brought about by climate change.
