Construction works across Awendo Constituency are set to commence in earnest following the flagging off of the electricity Last Mile Connectivity Project by President Dr. William Samoei Ruto on May 5th 2025 at Alara Nyambija village in North Sakwa Ward.
While speaking during the launch, President Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive development, emphasizing that no region of Kenya will be left behind in the national infrastructure transformation agenda.
The President, then, underscored that access to electricity remained a key enabler for economic growth, job creation, improved healthcare, quality education, and enhanced security.
Area Member of Parliament, Hon. Walter Owino, has since welcomed the development and assured residents that implementation would be swift and comprehensive beginning next week.
“I am happy to report that the construction works will begin by next week. Alara Nyambija village will be connected to the national grid immediately thereafter, and construction works in the remaining 39 villages within Awendo Constituency will also begin in earnest,” Hon. Owino posted on his social media this week.
The Awendo project forms part of the government’s wider Last Mile Connectivity Programme, which aims to ensure universal access to electricity, particularly in rural and previously marginalized areas.
President Ruto’s Commitment to Luo Nyanza Development
President Ruto’s visit and project launch underscored a broader policy shift aimed at accelerating infrastructure development in Luo Nyanza, a region that for decades experienced slow implementation of major government projects.
Under the current dispensation, Luo Nyanza has been prioritized for:
- Expansion of electricity connectivity through Last Mile and off-grid solutions to spur rural industrialization
- Road infrastructure upgrades, including tarmacking of key rural access roads to improve mobility and market access
- Water and irrigation projects to enhance food security and climate resilience
- Investment in affordable housing, education, and health facilities to improve social services
- Support for blue economy initiatives around Lake Victoria to boost livelihoods and regional trade
President Ruto has consistently reiterated that national unity is built through equitable development, not politics, and that government resources must serve all Kenyans fairly regardless of voting patterns.
Residents of Awendo and the larger Luo Nyanza region have welcomed the renewed focus on infrastructure, expressing optimism that improved electricity access will unlock new economic opportunities, empower small businesses, and improve overall quality of life.
The government has assured the public that all projects will be implemented transparently, on schedule, and with community involvement to ensure long-term sustainability.
