Dr. Pamela Odhiambo has renewed her quest for the Migori gubernatorial seat, marking a determined comeback after her 2022 bid was thwarted following a controversial party decision that saw a direct ticket handed to her political rival, Ochillo Ayacko.
Her renewed ambition signals resilience and a recalibrated strategy anchored on grassroots engagement, youth empowerment, and economic transformation.
In 2022, Dr. Odhiambo’s gubernatorial aspirations were cut short amid internal party dynamics within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), sparking widespread debate over internal democracy and fairness in party nominations. The experience, she says, strengthened her resolve to remain steadfast in advocating for inclusive leadership and participatory governance.
Now charting a new political path, Dr. Odhiambo has embarked on an aggressive grassroots mobilization campaign, directly engaging key economic players across the county.
In a significant move, she held a candid and productive meeting with leaders of the boda boda sector in Migori town—an industry that employs a substantial portion of the youth and serves as a vital pillar of the local economy.
“The boda boda sector employs a significant percentage of our youth. Though often looked down upon, it remains one of the strongest backbones of our local economy,” Dr. Odhiambo stated.
She acknowledged the untapped potential within the sector, noting that many operators are educated and industrious individuals who, despite limited opportunities, continue to drive economic activity and support their families.
“This is an industry filled with bright and educated individuals who, for various reasons, never got the opportunity to fully realize their potential. Yet, they continue to work hard every day to support their families and drive our economy forward,” she added.
During the engagement, boda boda leaders expressed strong support for her gubernatorial bid, pledging to rally behind her vision for a more inclusive and economically vibrant Migori County.
The meeting culminated in a symbolic show of political alignment, with members of the sector declaring their intention to join the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and back the re-election bid of William Ruto.
Dr. Odhiambo welcomed the endorsement, terming it a reflection of growing confidence in her leadership and development agenda.
“I am encouraged by their strong commitment and their willingness to support my bid for the gubernatorial seat. I assure them of my unwavering support to transform their working conditions, address their challenges, and create more opportunities for growth once elected,” she affirmed.
Her development blueprint prioritizes structured support for informal sectors, including access to affordable credit, improved infrastructure, safety regulations, and capacity-building programs tailored for boda boda operators.
Dr. Odhiambo has also been vocal against the push for zoning within ODM strongholds, describing it as an affront to democratic principles and a barrier to merit-based leadership.
“Leadership should be determined by the will of the people, not predetermined arrangements that lock out capable leaders. Migori deserves a fair contest and the freedom to choose,” she previously stated.
As the 2027 political landscape begins to take shape, Dr. Odhiambo’s renewed bid introduces a dynamic shift in Migori’s gubernatorial race. Her strategy—centered on direct voter engagement, youth inclusion, and economic empowerment—positions her as a formidable contender seeking to redefine leadership in the county.
“Together, we are building a stronger, more inclusive Migori County,” she concluded.
