Former Migori parliamentarian and gubernatorial hopeful Dr. Pamela Odhiambo, has renewed her bid for the county’s top seat, positioning herself as a reform-driven leader determined to challenge entrenched political practices within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
Dr. Odhiambo’s renewed push comes after her initial attempt in the 2022 General Election was derailed when ODM issued a direct nomination ticket to her political rival, Ochillo Ayacko, a move that sparked debate over internal party democracy and fairness in candidate selection.
Background: Fallout from ODM Direct Ticketing
During the last election cycle, ODM’s decision to hand a direct ticket to Ayacko effectively locked out other contenders, including Dr. Odhiambo, who had invested heavily in grassroots mobilization. Critics at the time argued that the move undermined democratic competition within the party, a concern that continues to shape political discourse in Migori County.
The controversy has resurfaced in recent months following renewed calls by sections of ODM leadership to adopt zoning arrangements ahead of the 2027 General Election. Zoning, a system where specific regions are informally allocated particular seats or candidates, has been defended by proponents as a tool for political balance, but opponents argue it stifles competition and voter choice.
Odhiambo Rejects Zoning, Calls for Democratic Space
Dr. Odhiambo has strongly criticized the zoning proposal, terming it “an affront to democracy” and a direct threat to the constitutional rights of voters.
“The push for zoning is a dangerous precedent that denies the people of Migori the freedom to choose leaders based on merit, vision, and integrity. Democracy must be protected at all costs,” she said.
She further noted that the future of the county cannot be determined through backroom agreements, but through open, transparent, and competitive electoral processes.
Youth-Centric Campaign Strategy
In a strategic shift, Dr. Odhiambo has intensified her engagement with young voters, recognizing them as a decisive voting bloc in the upcoming elections. Her campaign has been marked by a series of youth forums, mentorship programs, and door-to-door outreach initiatives across the county.
One of the highlights of her recent engagements was her participation in a mentorship forum organized by the Migori County Universities and Colleges Students Association at Kendege Technical Vocational College in Kuria East Sub-county.
“I had the honor of speaking at a mentorship program organized by the Migori County Universities and Colleges Students Association at Kendege TVC in Kuria East Sub-county,” she said.
“It was a powerful engagement filled with wisdom, shared experiences, and meaningful dialogue. I mentored the students on essential life and leadership skills, encouraging them to remain focused, disciplined, and visionary.”
Dr. Odhiambo expressed optimism about the growing support among the youth, noting that their energy and ideas are central to her vision for Migori County.
“I’m deeply encouraged by their commitment and the overwhelming support they have expressed toward my journey of becoming the next county boss. The future is bright, and it is in safe hands.”
Building Momentum Ahead of 2027
Political analysts view Dr. Odhiambo’s renewed bid as a significant development in Migori’s evolving political landscape, particularly as debates around party democracy, zoning, and generational leadership continue to intensify.
Her grassroots approach, coupled with a strong pro-democracy stance, is likely to resonate with voters seeking inclusive leadership and accountability within party structures.
As the 2027 race begins to take shape, Dr. Odhiambo’s campaign is expected to test the influence of traditional party hierarchies against a rising wave of voter-driven political participation.
