In commemoration of World Teachers’ Day, set for 5th October 2025, teachers across Kisumu County have taken an environmental approach to the celebrations by planting trees in their respective schools.
World Teachers’ Day is dedicated to recognizing and appreciating the vital role teachers play globally. In Kisumu, educators chose to mark the occasion by contributing to environmental conservation while celebrating their profession.
At Kasagam Secondary School in Kisumu East Sub-County, teachers, led by the principal, Mrs. Jessica Sikuku, together with a section of students, planted trees as a symbol of growth, knowledge, and sustainability.
Speaking during the exercise, Mrs. Sikuku noted that the initiative not only honoured teachers but also supported the fight against climate change. “By planting trees, we are making our contribution towards restoring the environment while leaving a legacy for generations to come,” she said.
The exercise was carried out in line with guidelines from the Ministry of Education, which issued a circular directing every teacher to plant at least five trees. The move is part of a nationwide campaign aimed at increasing forest cover and addressing the climate change crisis affecting many parts of the country.
Through this initiative, Kisumu teachers demonstrated that honouring their profession can go hand in hand with safeguarding the planet.
