South Nyanza is set to experience improved electricity reliability with the completion of the 132kV Awendo-Masaba Transmission Line and Masaba Substation, a project spearheaded by the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO).
The new power infrastructure is expected to ease load constraints on the Sondu line, ensuring an efficient and uninterrupted electricity supply across the region.
The high-rise steel towers used in the transmission line will eliminate tree-related disruptions, significantly enhancing reliability.
According to Eng. Moses Kerre, the Project Manager, said the transmission line is fully completed and currently undergoing commissioning.
It is scheduled to be operational within the next 2-3 months, creating a stronger and more interconnected grid by linking Olkaria to Bomet, Sondu, and Ndhiwa.
Once energized, the Masaba Substation will reinforce low-voltage connections from Awendo to Migori and Kehancha.
It is equipped with high-capacity transformers and a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, allowing for real-time monitoring and efficient management of power distribution.
“The commissioning of this project in May 2025 will be a game-changer for South Nyanza, providing stable, reliable, and efficient electricity to drive economic growth and development,” stated Eng. Kerre.
The project is expected to boost businesses, industries, and essential services in the region by ensuring a dependable power supply, reducing outages, and supporting future economic expansion
