Police in Kisumu have launched an investigation following the tragic death of a middle aged man who plunged from the second floor of the Lake Basin Mall on Thursday morning.
The man reportedly died instantly from the fall.
The deceased has been identified as Engineer Hannington Raburu Juma. Reports indicate that Mr. Juma had an appointment with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers, whose offices are situated on the mall’s second floor, moments before the unfortunate incident.
According to a police report, Juma arrived at the mall, parked his white V8 Land Cruiser (registration number KCY 069G), and proceeded to the KRA offices. Shortly after, he fell from the building.
The body was recovered and transported to the Aga Khan Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
KRA issued a statement confirming the incident. “A middle-aged man jumped from the second floor of the building, sustained serious injuries and succumbed,” the authority stated. “KRA regrets this incident and conveys heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”
The authority confirmed that the matter has been reported to the relevant authorities for further action.
The incident immediately sparked widespread discussion online, with unverified information circulating that the engineer was deeply disturbed over his tax obligations.
Some claims, which police have not yet confirmed, alleged that Mr. Juma had recently been served with a massive Sh.300 million tax bill in arrears.
Police are yet to confirm the motive behind the fatal leap, but the focus remains on his scheduled meeting with the tax authority.
