Residents of Migori town have called on the national and county governments to expedite the construction of the damaged Migori Town Bridge, saying its closure has disrupted activities in the town and surrounding areas.
Led by Migori Bunge La Mwananchi chairperson Charles Osewe, the residents said the prolonged closure of the bridge had hindered many activities and affected movement in the area.
The bridge was closed by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) in February after its structural integrity was compromised by rising water levels on River Migori.
The swelling waters washed away the gabion protecting the upstream side of the bridge, making it dangerous for motorists to use.
The bridge is located along the A1 highway connecting the border town of Isebania through Migori to Kisii. It also links Migori town to towns in Kuria, including Kehancha, Gegonga and Ndimaru.
However, a committee bringing together various industry sectors in Migori said engineers were already on site conducting a second feasibility study on the structural integrity of the bridge before construction works can begin.
The committee, led by Migori Civil Society chairperson Tobias Ogola, said the feasibility study was underway.
The closure has also affected businesses operating along alternative routes, including the Nyamware-Zamzam road on the outskirts of Migori.
The busy murram road has experienced excessive dust following increased use as an alternative route, disrupting traffic and affecting businesses.
Residents have also raised concerns over the health risks posed by the dust and road safety along the alternative route.
