The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has a new leader, as Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama emerged victorious in a fiercely contested election, securing 3,728 votes.
Kanjama, a renowned advocate with over 20 years of experience in commercial law, human rights, and constitutional litigation, will succeed outgoing President Faith Odhiambo, who has led the society with distinction.
Kanjama’s impressive tally surpassed his closest rival, Peter Wanyama, who garnered 2,616 votes, while current LSK Vice President Mwaura Kabata came third with 2,086 votes.
The nationwide election saw widespread participation from advocates, underscoring the significance of LSK’s leadership in shaping Kenya’s legal landscape.
A seasoned litigator and advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Kanjama has served as a Commissioner with the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission and has been actively involved in various LSK committees.
His expertise spans corporate governance, dispute resolution, and public interest litigation, with notable appearances before local and international courts.
During his campaign, Kanjama outlined a vision focused on enhancing advocate welfare, safeguarding the independence of the Bar, and promoting the rule of law.
He emphasized the need for robust engagement with State institutions and stakeholders to drive judicial reforms and legislative processes.
As President, Kanjama is poised to leverage the LSK’s expertise to shape public policy and promote access to justice.
The society has been a key player in Kenya’s constitutional development and continues to play a pivotal role in defending human rights and the constitution.
Transition arrangements are underway, with a formal handover scheduled per LSK regulations.
Kanjama’s leadership is expected to usher in a new era of excellence and professionalism for the LSK.
