George Odhiambo Owade has been re elected as the farmers’ chairman in a closely contested election held at the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) Western Kenya headquarters in Ahero, marking a pivotal moment for the region’s agricultural sector.
The election, which drew significant interest from rival farmer factions, was overseen by NIA Western Schemes Manager Ken Sitawa.
Despite earlier fears of possible unrest, the exercise was conducted peacefully, with participants praising the process as orderly and transparent a reflection of growing unity among Ahero farmers.
Owade’s victory reaffirms farmers’ confidence in his leadership and ushers in a new three-year term expected to focus on agricultural transformation, innovation, and inclusivity. In his acceptance speech, he pledged to embrace servant leadership, emphasizing collaboration, transparency, and farmer-centered decision-making.
“I am deeply honored by the trust you have placed in me. This victory belongs to every farmer in Ahero. Together, we will build a stronger and more prosperous farming community,” he said.
He also unveiled key developments set to reshape farming in the area.
The Republic of Hungary and the Japan International Cooperation Agency have partnered with local stakeholders to introduce modern irrigation technologies aimed at boosting productivity.
Among the planned initiatives are solar-powered irrigation systems to cut energy costs and ensure reliable water supply, as well as the introduction of a second cropping season to increase yields and farmers’ incomes.
The initiatives come at a time when farmers are grappling with rising production costs and climate change, with stakeholders viewing the partnerships as a timely intervention to promote sustainable agriculture.
Local leaders and farmers who attended the event expressed optimism about the future, citing Owade’s experience and the new projects as key drivers of economic growth.
They also urged continued unity to fully capitalize on the emerging opportunities.
As Owade begins his new term, expectations remain high that his leadership, combined with international collaboration and modern farming practices, will usher in a new era of progress, resilience, and shared prosperity for Ahero’s farming community.
