The Member of Parliament for Awendo Constituency, Walter Owino, has delivered on his long-standing pledge to support needy students through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) over the weekend, even as he unveiled an ambitious roadmap for expanded infrastructure development across the constituency.
In a move that has brought relief to hundreds of families, Hon. Owino confirmed the successful disbursement of the 2026 bursary allocations, ensuring that vulnerable learners in secondary schools, colleges and universities remain in class.
The bursary programme, a key pillar of his education agenda, has been scaled up to cushion parents grappling with economic pressures and rising school fees.
“Education is the greatest equaliser,” the MP said during the announcement.
“When we invest in our children, we invest in the future of Awendo. No bright student should miss school because of financial hardship.”
But beyond education support, Owino has been steadily positioning Awendo for long-term socio-economic transformation through targeted infrastructure projects.
A major milestone has been the advancement of the Awendo Water Last Mile Connectivity Project, aimed at extending clean and reliable piped water to households that have for years relied on streams, shallow wells and costly vendors.
The project is expected to significantly improve public health outcomes, ease the burden on women and children who walk long distances in search of water, and stimulate small-scale economic activities that depend on steady supply.
Road infrastructure has equally featured prominently in the MP’s development blueprint.
Several feeder roads linking rural wards to Awendo town and neighboring markets are undergoing rehabilitation and upgrading.
Improved road networks are expected to lower transport costs for farmers, ease access to schools and health facilities, and enhance overall connectivity within the sugar-belt constituency.
Residents say the ongoing works are already improving mobility and trade.Housing has also taken centre stage.
In alignment with the national government’s affordable housing agenda, plans are underway for the development of hundreds of housing units within the constituency.
The project is designed to provide decent and affordable shelter to low- and middle-income families while creating employment opportunities for local youth in construction and related sectors.
Electricity connectivity under the national Last-Mile Programme has further boosted development efforts.
Working closely with the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation, the MP has overseen the installation of transformers and extension of power lines to previously underserved villages.
The expanded grid access is expected to spur small businesses, enable digital learning for students, enhance security and support agro-processing ventures.
Development observers note that Owino’s approach combines social investment with physical infrastructure — a strategy aimed at ensuring that economic growth is inclusive and sustainable.
As he delivered the bursary cheques, the MP reiterated his commitment to transparency and equitable distribution of resources.
He pledged to continue engaging residents through public forums to prioritise projects that directly address community needs.
“Our journey is far from over,” he said.“From water to roads, from housing to electricity, we are laying a foundation that will uplift every corner of Awendo.”
With education support already delivered and multiple infrastructure projects underway, Awendo Constituency appears to be entering a new phase of accelerated development — one that blends immediate relief for families with long-term investment in the region’s future.
