A major terror plot targeting Nairobi has been foiled following a high-level counter-terrorism operation conducted by officers from the National Police Service in collaboration with other security agencies.
According to security sources, the operation was the culmination of months of coordinated intelligence gathering, surveillance, and data analysis focusing on individuals suspected to have links with the Somalia-based extremist group Al-Shabaab.
The suspects are believed to have been planning a potentially devastating attack within the capital.
Months of Intelligence Work
Authorities revealed that the breakthrough came after sustained monitoring of suspicious movements and communications tied to a broader extremist network operating within and beyond Kenya’s borders.
Acting on verified intelligence, security officers raided a hideout in Nairobi believed to have been used as a logistical base by the suspects.
During the operation, officers recovered a significant cache of weapons and supplies, underscoring the scale and seriousness of the disrupted plot.
Seized items included five AK-47 assault rifles, 20 magazines loaded with a total of 600 rounds of ammunition, six hand grenades, and a Makarov pistol loaded with 24 rounds of ammunition.
Investigators also recovered medical kits and other logistical supplies, suggesting that the suspects were well-prepared and possibly in the final stages of planning an attack.

Security officials described the operation as a clear demonstration of sustained inter-agency collaboration and proactive security measures aimed at neutralising imminent threats before they materialise.
“This operation reflects the intensive and often unseen efforts by our intelligence and security teams who work around the clock to detect, disrupt, and dismantle extremist networks,” a senior officer familiar with the operation said.
The Anti-Terrorism Police Unit and the Special Operations Group, specialised formations within the police service, were part of the coordinated mission.
The units continue to maintain heightened vigilance across Nairobi and other major towns, monitoring potential threats and responding swiftly to safeguard the public, critical infrastructure, and public spaces.
