Awendo Member of Parliament, Hon. Walter Owino, has urged elected leaders to embrace unity of purpose and serve the electorate without bias. Speaking at Bondo Otuchi Primary School in his constituency, where he oversaw the distribution of Ksh. 51 million in bursaries to high school and tertiary institution students, Mr. Owino reiterated the need for cohesion among leaders to foster meaningful development.
“We have to unite for the sake of the electorate since our work involves service to the people. We were all elected to serve the same people, regardless of our political affiliations and future aspirations. Those seeking elective posts must ensure that service delivery remains a priority,” said Mr. Owino.
His remarks come in the wake of a recent meeting in Nairobi, where he accompanied Migori legislators and Governor Ochillo Ayacko for discussions with Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi. The meeting underscored the importance of collaborative leadership in advancing development initiatives.
The MP further emphasized the need for prudent management of resources to ensure that development projects benefit the grassroots. He urged leaders to work together to attract investment in key sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, which are vital for socio-economic progress in the region.
Addressing the ongoing discourse on the African Union Commission (AUC) elections and calls for Raila Odinga to join the Kenya Kwanza government, Mr. Owino dismissed the speculations as premature and miscalculated.
“We are yet to receive any official communication as a party regarding Mr. Odinga’s position following the AUC election outcome. However, we are confident that Raila will provide direction at an appropriate time,” he stated.
He further called on leaders from the Mt. Kenya region to refrain from divisive rhetoric and hostility towards the Luo community, condemning the perceived celebration of Mr. Odinga’s AUC loss.
“Some of our brothers from Mt. Kenya are openly celebrating the loss, yet the Luo community has always stood with them since independence. In 1963, Jaramogi Oginga supported the founding president Jomo Kenyatta, and in 2002, Raila Odinga spearheaded the endorsement of former President Mwai Kibaki,” he noted.
Mr. Owino urged for national cohesion and the integration of communities ahead of the 2027 elections. He cautioned leaders against making inflammatory statements that could polarize the country, emphasizing the need for peace and collective development.
Mr Owino has been a key advocate for grassroots development and equitable resource allocation in Awendo and beyond.
Since his election, he has spearheaded various initiatives, including bursary programs for students, infrastructural improvements, and health sector enhancements.
His leadership has been instrumental in fostering unity among leaders within Migori County, ensuring that political differences do not hinder development efforts.
With a strong stance on national unity, Hon. Owino continues to champion peace, integration, and social justice, reinforcing his commitment to the electorate and the broader Kenyan community.
