Awendo Constituency continues to witness a remarkable transformation in the education sector following renewed investments in school infrastructure and bursary support spearheaded by Awendo Member of Parliament Hon. Walter Owino through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF).
The latest milestone was marked by the official handover of a modern one-storey building comprising eight fully equipped classrooms at Dede Comprehensive School, a project funded through the Awendo NG-CDF. The project forms part of an aggressive education improvement agenda being rolled out across the constituency under Hon. Owino’s leadership.
The legislator also presided over the commissioning of a newly constructed administration block at Wawaga Comprehensive School in North Sakwa Ward, further cementing his commitment to improving learning environments for thousands of learners in the region.
Speaking during the handover ceremonies, Hon. Walter Owino said education remains the greatest equalizer and pledged to continue investing heavily in modern learning facilities to ensure children from Awendo compete favorably with their counterparts across the country.
“Our vision is to give every child in Awendo a dignified learning environment regardless of their social or economic background. We are determined to transform our schools into centers of excellence because education is the foundation of sustainable development,” said Owino.
The MP noted that Dede Comprehensive School had for many years posted commendable academic performance despite operating under poor infrastructural conditions, adding that the new classrooms would significantly improve the learning experience for both teachers and learners.
“Dede Comprehensive has consistently demonstrated academic potential even with inadequate infrastructure. Today, we are changing that narrative by providing modern classrooms that match the school’s academic ambitions,” he stated.
The newly completed classroom block becomes the third major comprehensive educational infrastructure overhaul undertaken by the Awendo NG-CDF after similar successful projects at St. Cecilia Olare and Anindo Comprehensive School.
The legislator emphasized that the constituency leadership is keen on creating a conducive environment that inspires academic excellence, discipline, and innovation among learners.
“Success is not final and failure is not fatal. What matters is the courage to continue transforming lives. We are committed to ensuring every ward benefits from quality educational infrastructure,” he added.
Beyond infrastructure development, the Awendo legislator highlighted the constituency’s expanded bursary program that has enabled hundreds of vulnerable and needy students to remain in school and pursue secondary and tertiary education.
According to the MP, the bursary initiative has become a lifeline for children from underprivileged families who previously faced difficulties paying school fees.
“No bright student should stay at home because of poverty. Through our bursary programs, many students who had lost hope are now pursuing their dreams in secondary schools, colleges, and universities,” Owino remarked.
Parents and residents who attended the events praised the legislator for prioritizing education and initiating projects that are directly impacting the lives of ordinary wananchi.
Mr. Jared Ochieng, a parent from North Sakwa Ward, lauded the MP for restoring hope among learners through improved school infrastructure.
“For years our children studied in congested and dilapidated classrooms. What Hon. Walter Owino is doing is commendable because our children now have a better environment to learn and succeed,” he said.
Mrs. Millicent Akinyi, whose daughter benefited from the constituency bursary program, emotionally narrated how the initiative saved her child’s education.
“I had almost given up because I could not afford school fees after losing my job. The bursary support enabled my daughter to continue with her education uninterrupted. Many families here have benefited immensely,” she said.
Teachers from the beneficiary schools also expressed optimism that the new facilities would improve academic performance and morale among learners.
The Awendo MP further called upon residents to continue participating in identifying priority development projects in their respective wards to ensure equitable distribution of NG-CDF resources.
“Development works best when the people are fully involved. I appreciate the residents of North Sakwa and the entire Awendo Constituency for supporting our education agenda and giving us the opportunity to transform our schools together,” he said.
Education stakeholders in the constituency have increasingly credited the ongoing infrastructure expansion, bursary allocation, and school modernization efforts for gradually improving enrollment, retention, and performance in national examinations across several schools in Awendo Constituency.
With more projects lined up in the coming financial year, residents now hope the continued investments in education will position Awendo as one of the leading academic hubs in Migori County.
