Coastal women have been called upon to actively participate in political parties to increase their chances of election, thus contributing to the realization of the two-thirds gender rule in Kenya. During a women’s engagement forum in Changamwe.
Maimuna Mwidau, a political analyst and key figure in the Pamoja African Alliance (PAA), emphasized the importance of women not merely observing but actively engaging in political processes.
Ms, Mwidau highlighted PAA’s ongoing efforts to recruit new members, particularly women and Gen Z, as the party seeks to broaden its influence across the coastal region.
“PAA is your party,” Mwidau stated, urging women to join and actively participate to influence change through their votes where she assured women that PAA is committed to supporting female candidates, offering them nomination certificates if they vie for elective positions.
The forum also addressed the need for women to leverage social media positively, as advised by PAA National Treasurer Sureya Hersi who encouraged women to use these platforms for income generation and community transformation rather than divisive rhetoric.
She also stressed the importance of unity among women, urging them to support PAA as a strong, coast-based alternative to national parties.
“Empowerment begins with participation. Coastal women, let your voices be heard—join the political arena and drive the change you seek,” Said Mwidau.
Beatrice Achieng, PAA’s National Deputy Women Leader, acknowledged that while the party is inclusive, there have been instances of favoritism in awarding nomination slots.
However, she reassured the women that the party is dedicated to rectifying these issues and ensuring fair representation moving forward.
The forum concluded with a call for women to form grassroots committees to strengthen their political influence, underscoring the significance of women’s participation in shaping the nation’s political landscape.
