CS Kipchumba Murkomen Speaks Following Fatal Clashes Between Civilians and Police in Narok County

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, has condemned the recent violent clashes in Narok County that left seven civilians dead and five police officers critically injured.

The incident, which occurred amid an escalating land ownership dispute in the Angara Barrikoi area, has drawn national concern and prompted high-level investigations into the causes of the unrest.

Calling the confrontation “deeply unfortunate,” CS Murkomen emphasized the government’s commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for all those affected.

“Let me start by saying that this is a sad occurrence for us because we must ensure that lives are protected. These issues should not lead to the loss of life,” said Murkomen.

According to initial reports, tensions flared when law enforcement personnel were deployed to quell growing protests over contested land claims.

During the confrontation, one officer sustained a critical arrow injury to the head, and five police vehicles were set ablaze.

The Ministry of Interior has confirmed that a full-scale investigation is underway to determine whether the police response was proportionate and to identify the individuals responsible for the violence.

Murkomen further warned against the spread of misinformation, which he blamed for inflaming tensions in an already volatile environment.

“We need to establish the circumstances under which the officers were injured and whether the police response was warranted. Investigations will also establish who perpetrated the acts against the officers,” he stated.

“No one is coming to take your land. There is a lot of misguided propaganda being spread, and we must stop this culture of incitement.”

The Angara Barrikoi region has in recent years experienced recurring land-related disputes, often tied to historical grievances and lack of clear land adjudication. Local leaders have been urged to help de-escalate tensions and guide community dialogue as the situation remains fragile.

In response to the unrest, the government has deployed additional police to the area and issued a strong advisory against any further protests, especially after dark, to prevent further bloodshed.

“We will deal firmly with anyone found inciting violence or prompting the use of force,” CS Murkomen affirmed.

The government has called for calm and patience as investigations continue, pledging that the findings will be made public and that both civilians and law enforcement officials found culpable will be held accountable.
