At least eight people died following the grisly road accident in Migori on Saturday, April 8, 2023.
The accident has been caused by a lorry that was ferrying loads of rice along the Kisii-Isebania highway.
According to Kevin Omondi who witnessed the accident, the accident started right from the bridge where two people were swept by the lorry making them drop into the River.
“Two people are feared dead after the lorry hit them. The two dropped into River Migori,” said Kevin.
Migori County police commander Mark Wanjala has confirmed the loss of eight lives from the accident.
“We understand that at least seven people have lost their lives to a road accident that involved a lorry. It is quite unfortunate and we send our sincere condolences to the bereaved families,” said Wanjala.
Several leaders have also sent their messages of condolences to the miles who have lost their loved ones.
“I offer my deepest sympathies to all those who have lost their loved ones, friends, and colleagues in the tragic accident that occurred this morning at the boda boda stage in Migori town,” Raila Odinga, Azimio One Kenya leader.
Also accompanying Raila in condoling the bereaved families is Kisumu Governor, Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o.
“I wish, on behalf of the LREB leadership and the people of Kisumu to condole with Governor Ochillo Ayacko, the families of those killed and the people of Migori.
It is a sad Easter for all of us,” said Professor Nyong’o.
Several operations are underway to rescue those who have survived the road accidents.
Traffic police have also been on operations to at least control the movement of vehicles along the highway which has been a black spot for such accidents.
