In a shocking turn of events, a fire erupted yesterday evening at the Migori County Assembly, destroying crucial documents just hours after auditors visited the premises.
The incident, which occurred at around 6:30 PM, left the temporary iron sheet storage facility in ruins, consuming not only files but also bundles of bottled water among other items whose values are yet to be accounted for.
Despite the swift response from the county fire team, many of the documents were rendered unrecognizable, raising concerns about the integrity of records dating back to 2013.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the loss of vital materials, including public participation and procurement documents, has sparked alarm among residents and officials alike.
Migori County Assembly Speaker Christopher Rusana while addressing the media after visiting the scene, assured the public that the assembly remains fully functional.
“Most of the destroyed documents were archived materials from 2013-2017,” Rusana stated.
He emphasized that the fire would not disrupt ongoing operations, as the most critical records for the current financial year remain intact and have not been compromised.
While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Rusana ruled out electrical faults, noting that the storage facility was not connected to power.

County staff are currently conducting an inventory to assess the full extent of the damage and are assisting the police with inquiries.
Moreover, the assembly leadership reassured the public of its commitment to maintaining operational integrity as investigations proceed.
Following the incident, some members of the public grapple with this unexpected incident, as questions linger about the timing and potential implications for transparency in the assembly’s operations.
