“G-Jali Platform Launched at Rongo University to Mark International Condom Day and Empower Youth on Sexual Health”

In celebration of International Condom Day, Rongo University launched the G-Jali Platform, a major initiative aimed at raising awareness about sexual health, condom use, and HIV prevention among students. This campaign aligns with Kenya’s observance of Condom Day, emphasizing the critical role of safe sexual practices in reducing the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and promoting responsible sexual behavior.

The event was officially kicked off with an engaging program featuring educational workshops, live performances, and powerful speeches from public health experts. One of the key highlights was the participation of Dr. Caroline Kinoti, Deputy Director of Health Promotion and Capacity Development at the National Steering and Development Coordination Centre (NSDCC), who explained that the G-JENGE Campaign’s goal was to amplify awareness through both social media campaigns and peer-led activities.

“The G-Jali Campaign seeks to foster a strong, informed youth network by utilizing social media and peer review programs. By engaging students through platforms they already use, we can ensure that this vital message of safe sex and health responsibility resonates and spreads widely,” Dr. Kinoti shared.

The campaign also gained strong support from Ms. Catherine Menganyi, the Migori County GBV Coordinator, who praised the initiative for its potential impact on gender-based violence (GBV) prevention. “This campaign is a crucial step in addressing the reproductive health needs of young people, especially in preventing the triple threat effects—HIV, unintended pregnancies, and gender-based violence. It’s not just about safe sex, but about empowering youth to make healthier choices in all aspects of their lives,” Ms. Menganyi said.

Students also expressed enthusiasm for the campaign, with Nelly Kithinji, a student leader, highlighting its transformative potential. “This is more than just a campaign; it’s a platform to transform how we view reproductive health and how we take care of ourselves. I believe it will reduce the stigma surrounding safe sex and create an open space for youth to discuss issues that directly affect us,” Kithinji stated.

Victor Apicha, another student leader, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the campaign’s role in tackling the pressing health challenges faced by students. “We are seeing a generation of youth grappling with health issues that impact our futures. The G-Jali Campaign provides a unique opportunity to address these concerns in a way that feels relevant, modern, and accessible. It’s time to take action,” Apicha added.

The campaign also introduced Rongo University’s Peer Educator Program, which will train students to lead sexual health awareness initiatives across the campus, ensuring that the conversation continues well beyond the event.

Dr. Samuel Otieno, an HIV prevention expert, spoke about the growing importance of accessible sexual health education, particularly in university settings. “With young people making pivotal decisions about their health, the G-Jali platform plays a critical role in providing them with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed and safe choices,” Dr. Otieno said.

In the coming weeks, the campaign will extend its reach through ongoing social media engagement using the hashtag #GJaliRongo, community outreach events, and the continued distribution of condoms across campus. Rongo University is collaborating with local health organizations and NGOs to amplify the campaign’s message and provide ongoing support for students’ sexual health and well-being.

The G-JENGE Campaign represents a collective effort to reduce the stigma surrounding sexual health, promote safe sexual behaviors, and empower students to take control of their health and futures.
