Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has led tributes to the late Kasipul Member of Parliament, Hon. Sir Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was tragically slain under circumstances that have sent shockwaves throughout the nation.

In a heartfelt tribute, Governor Wanga mourned the death of a comrade, friend, and brother, praising the late MP’s unwavering dedication to his constituents, his political ideals, and his family.

Quoting 1 Corinthians 15:54-58, “O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory?” Governor Wanga recounted her 13-year political journey alongside Mr Were, noting their close collaboration since she entered politics in 2013 and his public support for her gubernatorial bid in 2022.

“Sir Chalis, as I often called him, was a man of his word. What you saw is what you got,” Wanga said. “He was honest, deeply loyal, and passionately committed to the people of Kasipul and to our party, ODM. His grassroots mobilization, his love for the people, and his ability to organize cannot be overstated.”

Known fondly by his constituents as Jakowaro, Hon. Were was widely respected for his tireless service to the people of Kasipul, attending community functions regularly and championing development projects in education, water, transport, and church infrastructure.

He was also a staunch supporter of ODM leader Raila Odinga and played a key role in strengthening the party’s structures in Kasipul and beyond.

Wanga also remembered the late MP as a family and church man, often opening his home to guests and working closely with local Catholic clergy to support church projects.

“Wuon Ojaa loved his family deeply and was proudly multiparty in managing his home,” she said.

Across Kenya, leaders from various political divides have expressed sorrow and solidarity with the people of Homa Bay.

ODM leader Raila Odinga described Hon. Were as “a brave and loyal servant of the people whose voice will be missed in Parliament and in the movement for social justice.”

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula also offered condolences, urging swift justice and unity in mourning.

Security agencies have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the MP’s death, which has sparked national concern.

Civil society organizations, clergy, and grassroots movements have called for calm and for a transparent probe.

Governor Wanga concluded her tribute with a powerful message: “Go well my friend, I will miss you greatly. May the angels receive you. May you rest well—and may your killers never rest.”
