Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Ong’ondo Were, was tragically shot dead on the evening of April 30, 2025, in a targeted attack along Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 PM when two men on a motorbike opened fire on Were’s vehicle. One of the assailants shot at close range before fleeing the scene at high speed.
Were’s driver, who survived the attack, was reportedly unharmed.
Eyewitnesses, including traffic officers at the scene, were said to have witnessed the shooting.
The MP was quickly rushed to Nairobi Hospital but was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.
This shocking event comes just three days after a similar shooting incident involving a Member of the County Assembly (MCA) from the Kasipul area, raising alarm about the safety of public leaders, particularly in the capital.
The close proximity of these two attacks has stirred widespread concern.
Charles Ong’ondo Were had previously expressed fears for his life, revealing in public statements that he believed he was being targeted due to his vocal stance on issues affecting his constituents and his leadership within the region.
In recent months, he had raised concerns over rising violence in the Kasipul constituency, including attacks on locals by unknown assailants and a growing climate of insecurity.
He had even hinted that his efforts to push for justice for his people might have made him a target.
The violence in Kasipul has been escalating in recent times, with locals experiencing heightened levels of crime and a perceived breakdown of security.
Many residents of the area have complained about criminal elements operating with impunity, contributing to fears that the political instability could spill over into more targeted attacks on leaders who challenge the status quo.
At this time, the motive for the attack remains unclear. However, many speculate that the killing was a well-planned, targeted hit.
Authorities are investigating the incident to uncover the circumstances behind this tragic event.
The death of Charles Ong’ondo Were has left a deep sense of grief in his constituency and across the country.
A seasoned politician with years of public service, Were was a familiar figure in national affairs and will be remembered as a committed representative for his people.
His untimely demise has raised urgent questions about the security of political leaders in Kenya.
The public and the people of Kasipul are now looking to the government and security agencies for swift action to ensure justice is served and to provide reassurance to all citizens that their safety is a top priority.
