Residents of Chiga Village, Kisumu East Constituency, can breathe a sigh of relief following the official opening of a new police station, a crucial development set to enhance security in the area. The facility was constructed through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) championed by area Member of Parliament, Hon. Shakeel Shabir.
The opening of Chiga Police Station comes at a critical time when insecurity had become a significant challenge for the community. The area has recently been plagued by criminal activities, including cattle rustling and violent attacks by criminal gangs, often referred to as ‘Mbogi,’ who use motorbikes and are notorious for assaulting residents with machetes and blunt objects.
Presiding over the official opening, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja, urged the community to forge a strong working relationship with the police to curb insecurity effectively.
”Security is a shared responsibility, a shared responsibility between the National Police Service and wananchi (citizens),” said IG Kanja, stressing that collaboration is key to enhancing safety.
He also commended MP Shabir for his dedication to ensuring maximum security for Chiga residents. Kanja noted that the presence of the new police station is a game changer that will not only foster peace but also attract investment.
”Chiga Police Station will open the area for more investors to come and invest, and even the community will be living in peace,” the Inspector General stated.
On his part, MP Shakeel Shabir thanked the President of the Republic of Kenya, Dr. William Ruto, for initiating the program to construct the crucial Rabuor-Chiga-Kibos Road. Shabir highlighted that improved road infrastructure is also vital in addressing security concerns and boosting economic activity.
”I thank the President for giving us the Rabuor-Chiga-Kibos road; it will help us in curbing insecurity within Kisumu East and open up for investors to come and invest in the area,” Hon. Shabir remarked.
The MP further pledged to collaborate with the National Police Service to ensure that all police stations within the constituency are adequately equipped, specifically promising to acquire vehicles for both Ragumo and Chiga Police Stations.
