Migori County has started a clean-up exercise of cabbage collection after a public outcry from residents of Migori Town.
In recent weeks, Migori town has been un-mulled by bad odour emanating from rotting cabbage that remained uncollected for close to three weeks.
Ibrahim Ramadhan, a resident of Migori town lamented that the uncollected cabbage has been posing a danger to the business community, county residents and school-going children.
Ramadhan who operates a hardware business in Migori town said that he has been severely affected by the bad smell oozing from the rotting cabbage that is directly opposite his premises.
“On Monday, I did not open my business because of the bad smell that was originating from the three weeks of uncollected cabbage”, lamented Ramadhan.
Winne Achieng, a hotel business operator said that the uncollected baggage has forced her to close her eatery because of the unhealthy and unhygienic surroundings.
Achieng disclosed that her customers have refused to eat in her hotel due to the unhygienic nature that the uncollected cabbage has created.
She urged the county government to hold those responsible for dumping the cabbage in places that have not been designated as dumping sites.
“Migori County should designate more safe dumping sites to ensure that cabbage collection is on a timely basis to protect the residents and businesses as well as improve the hygiene of our town”, decried Akinyi.
Migori County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Environment Julius Nyerere has however, disclosed that the county has embarked on a through clean up exercise to improve the hygiene and environmental safety of major towns in the county.
