A police investigation into the suspected diversion of government relief food has drawn a Muhoroni parliamentary aspirant into the spotlight after detectives recovered hundreds of bags of food from a family homestead in Kisumu County.
The operation, conducted by officers from Masogo Police Station acting on intelligence, targeted the home of the late Johana Nyasuna in Ngere Kagoro Sub-location, North East Kano Sub-county.
According to the police occurrence book (OB) report, officers recovered relief food that had been allocated to the Deputy County Commissioner’s office in Muhoroni Sub-county for distribution to vulnerable families in Chemelil.
The recovered consignment comprised 300 bags of 50-kilogramme rice, 250 bags of 50-kilogramme beans and 20 bags of 25-kilogramme Uji Mix, all found stored inside a house within the compound.
Police also impounded a Mercedes-Benz transit goods trailer, registration number KCG 240F, believed to have transported the consignment.
The vehicle belongs to Pontypridd Holdings and was being driven by Charles Gichoki when officers moved in.
The trailer driver and a storekeeper were arrested and are assisting detectives with investigations.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Muhoroni has taken over the case and is expected to establish how the government relief food was diverted before reaching its intended beneficiaries.
The investigations have generated political interest because the homestead is linked to the family of Muhoroni parliamentary aspirant Robert Nyasuna, who is also the brother of Gladys Wanga.
Sources familiar with the investigation allege that detectives are examining whether Nyasuna had any connection to the recovered consignment.
However, police have not named him as a suspect or preferred any charges against him, and investigations remain ongoing.
When contacted for comment over the recovery, Nyasuna declined to address the allegations directly, saying:”Ask me something serious on how to empower our people.”
The incident is likely to fuel political debate in Muhoroni ahead of the next General Election, with leaders expected to demand accountability over the management of government relief supplies.
Authorities say a comprehensive progress report will be released once investigations are complete.
