The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) is set to lead Kenya’s commemoration of the International Day of Peace (IDoP) in Kisumu on September 21, 2025, under the theme “Act Now for a Peaceful World.”
As part of the build-up to the event, Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o joined NCIC officials in planting commemorative trees, urging world leaders to act swiftly to end conflicts across the globe.
Nyong’o appealed to the United Nations and the African Union to intervene in hotspots such as Gaza, Ukraine, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, saying the butchering of innocent civilians must stop.
“Let us focus on Gaza and Ukraine, and here in Africa, we must sort out the crises in the Central African Republic and the DRC.
What is being witnessed there must be stopped,” he said.
NCIC Chairman Rev. Samuel Kobia echoed the governor’s sentiments, stressing that the ongoing violence in Gaza amounts to genocide.
He also raised concern about the rise of organized criminal gangs, warning that they must be dealt with decisively to protect peace and security.
The NCIC, in partnership with the County Government of Kisumu, has been spearheading IDoP activities in the region.
The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly and is observed annually on September 21 to promote peace, unity, and non-violence globally.
