A section of political leaders from the Nyanza region has renewed its support for President William Ruto’s administration while urging the Head of State to accelerate the implementation of flagship development projects that they say are key to unlocking the region’s economic potential ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The leaders made the appeal during a women empowerment programme attended by President Ruto, where they praised the government’s recent investments in the region but insisted that more needs to be done to address decades of infrastructural neglect and high unemployment.
The meeting brought together several elected leaders, including Homa Bay Woman Representative Joyce Osogo, Suna West MP Peter Masara, Nyatike MP Tom Odege, Rongo MP Paul Abuor, Awendo MP Walter Owino, and other leaders from across the Nyanza region.
Speaking during the event, the leaders urged the President to fast-track stalled infrastructure projects, expand road networks, improve access to clean water, strengthen agricultural value chains and create more employment opportunities for young people.
President Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to equitable development across the country, saying no region would be sidelined in the allocation of national resources. He maintained that his government would continue investing in roads, affordable housing, electricity connectivity, healthcare and education regardless of political affiliations.
Awendo MP Walter Owino welcomed the President’s continued engagement with the region, saying visible development remains the surest way of strengthening public confidence in the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“Our people are not asking for promises; they are asking for projects that transform lives. We appreciate the progress already witnessed in Awendo, including the Livestock Training Institute, affordable housing programme and road infrastructure. Sustaining this momentum through timely completion of ongoing projects will create jobs, spur local investment and reinforce the confidence wananchi have in the government’s development agenda,” Owino said.
The first-term legislator noted that sustained investment in productive sectors such as agriculture, technical education and transport infrastructure would accelerate economic growth across Migori County and the wider Nyanza region.
His remarks come as Awendo continues to benefit from several national government projects, among them the Sh270 million Awendo Livestock Training Institute launched by President Ruto, the Affordable Housing Programme and ongoing improvements to strategic road networks intended to boost trade and agricultural productivity.
Political analysts say President Ruto’s increasing visits to Nyanza reflect an intensified effort by the Kenya Kwanza administration to consolidate support in a region that has historically backed opposition parties. The engagements have been accompanied by the commissioning of major development projects and increased consultations with local leaders.
With less than two years to the 2027 General Election, the pace of implementation of these projects is expected to play a significant role in shaping the region’s political outlook, as leaders continue to link development with future electoral support.
