Residents of Awendo Constituency are set to witness another milestone in their region’s infrastructure transformation after the long-awaited construction of the Kanyawanga–Dede–Rapogi Road officially gets underway on Tuesday, marking yet another major development project championed by Awendo MP John Walter Owino.
The commencement of works follows months of planning, technical surveys and coordination between the contractor, engineers and government agencies. According to project officials, all implementation teams have completed the necessary preparations and mobilization, paving the way for construction equipment to move on site.
For many residents, the road has long symbolized both opportunity and frustration. During the rainy season, motorists, traders, school-going children and farmers have struggled to navigate the deteriorating earth road, often spending hours covering distances that should take only minutes. The poor condition has also increased transport costs, slowed emergency response and limited access to markets for agricultural produce.
The start of construction therefore represents more than just another public works project. It reflects a broader infrastructure agenda that has increasingly defined Walter Owino’s tenure as Awendo’s Member of Parliament.
Since assuming office, Owino has consistently lobbied the national government to prioritize strategic projects aimed at unlocking the constituency’s economic potential. His development record includes improved road infrastructure, expansion of educational facilities through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), investment in healthcare infrastructure and support for national flagship projects that have positioned Awendo as an emerging growth centre in Migori County.
Among the landmark projects associated with his leadership are the ongoing Awendo Livestock Training Institute, which has received a government allocation of KSh270 million, the construction of modern NG-CDF-funded school facilities across the constituency, the expansion of student accommodation, and support for the Affordable Housing Programme being implemented by the national government.
The upgrading of the Kanyawanga–Dede–Rapogi corridor is expected to complement these investments by improving connectivity between rural production zones and urban markets while easing movement to Rapogi, Awendo and neighbouring parts of Migori County.
Speaking ahead of the groundbreaking exercise, Owino welcomed the commencement of works, saying the project fulfils a commitment made to residents.
“Tomorrow marks the beginning of another transformative chapter for our people. The contractor and all technical teams are fully prepared to begin work. This road will improve transport, stimulate business, support our farmers and make movement easier for every resident who depends on this corridor. We remain committed to delivering tangible development that changes lives.”
Residents and business owners have expressed optimism that the improved road will reduce vehicle maintenance costs, shorten travel time and stimulate economic activity by attracting investment into the region.
Political analysts note that infrastructure has become one of the defining features of Owino’s first term, with roads increasingly serving as visible indicators of government presence in previously underserved areas.
As construction machinery rolls into Kanyawanga, expectations are high that the project will not only improve transport but also strengthen the constituency’s economic prospects by connecting communities to schools, hospitals, markets and other essential services.
For many residents, Tuesday’s groundbreaking is another sign that Awendo’s ambitious development agenda continues to gather momentum.
If intended timelines are met, the Kanyawanga–Dede–Rapogi road is expected to become one of the constituency’s key transport arteries, further cementing Walter Owino’s emphasis on infrastructure-led development.
