Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Busia branch leadership welcomed the move by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) to settle on Busia woman representative Ms Catherine Omanyo to take up the position of ODM deputy secretary general that was left vacant after the former Busia Woman representative Ms Florence Mutua decamped to UDA.

Addressing the press in Busia town after a brief meeting on behalf of the party, ODM acting secretary general Busia branch Mr Godfrey Odongo promised to work closely with Ms Omanyo to strengthen the party in Busia.

“As ODM leadership in Busia county, we welcome the move by the National Executive Council to settle on Busia woman representative Ms Catherine Omanyo to take up the position of Party’s deputy secretary general after the former Busia women representative Ms Florence Mutua resigned from ODM and joined UDA. We just want to assure NEC that as a Busia branch, we are ready to work with Ms Omanyo to propel the party in Busia.”

On the grassroots ODM election, Mr Odongo noted that Busia is ready for the grassroots party’s elections adding that they will write a letter to the NEC to communicate the date when the elections will be taking place.

“NEC has already informed us that they are organizing for the party’s grassroots elections, we are ready for it. We will write a letter to them to communicate the exact date for us to prepare for the elections. Besides that, we will organize a meeting with sub-county leadership to fill the positions that were left vacant by those who defected from ODM.”

Mr Odongo further revealed that as an ODM Busia branch, they concur with the move made by the party’s disciplinary committee to expel some members of parliament from ODM as disciplinary action after associating themselves with other political parties.

“ODM in Busia, we support the move by the ODM disciplinary committee to suspend errant Members of Parliament from the party. Every political party in Kenya has its own constitution and how to deal with those going against it. What NEC did was just to bring sanity to the party. Before they were being elected in their positions they agreed to adhere to party rules and constitution and going against it, they deserve punishment,” he noted

In Busia County ODM will have to fill the positions that were left vacant including the position of Secretary General which was being held by Mr Innocent Oluku, the position of Deputy Chairperson was being held by Mr Patrick Obongoya, and the position of Busia women’s league chairperson that was under the leadership of Ms Angela Nekesa after the office bearers decamped ODM.
