Parents Slammed For Negligence Leading To Increased Cases Of Child Defilement, Teenage pregnancy.

Migori County Commissioner (CC) David Gitonga has blamed parents in Migori county for failing to guide well their children leading to skyrocketing cases of defilement, tenage pregnancies and early marriage.

He said that the bad habits held by parents of not inculcating good morals in their young ones had also led to a rise in cases of violence, drug abuse and total societal disrespect among the youth in the recent years.

The commissioner who was speaking during a public Baraza in Muhuru bay, Nyatike South sub county, stated that while defilement cases and teenage pregnancies are becoming a thorn in the flesh of most parents , many of them have not thought of taking the full responsibilty of teaching their children the right human morals and follow God’s teachings.

He said that it is worrying to find teenagers late in the night strolling in the dark when they are supposed to be in the house with their parents.

“During the just concluded festivites, parents decided to leave their children to roam around and engage in immoral errands that are detrimental to their lives,” he said.

The commissioner further outlined that it is during the odd hour times when the children are preyed upon by defilers and some end up engaging in behaviours that leads to early pregnancies and teen mothers.

Migori still ranks among the leading counties with defilement and teen pregnancies, where the causative agents are poverty, negligence and drug substance abuse.

Mr. Gitonga called upon parents and guardians to take good care of their children so as to help reduce cases of defilement and gender-based violence that has been rampant in the area

He said it is the duty of county security agencies to listen to locals concerns on matter security and address them, as well as sensitizing them on various government policies.

During the meeting, the locals expressed their dissatisfaction with the state of security along the border, citing harassment from the Tanzanian police officers.

This is in addition to the incidence of security breaches which has been heavily reported in Muhuru town where criminals cross to the other side after committing crime.

The commissioner announced that all county security agencies are making sure that everything is in place to safeguard the locals and, their properties will not be endangered again by security lapses in the area.

There are plans to meet with their counterpart from Tanzania to ensure a balanced cordial working relationship along the border.

He also announced plans by the county leadeship team to distribute relief food to those households affected by floods in a weeks time.
