Several Kenyan families have been directly impacted by the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, according to the latest reports from the Kenyan Consulate. At least two Kenyan families have been forced to evacuate their homes as a result of the fires.
In a statement issued by the Consul General of the Republic of Kenya in Los Angeles, Ezra Chiloba, the consulate confirmed that while no additional evacuations have been reported within the Kenyan community, they strongly encourage all Kenyans in the area to remain vigilant.
“Following our first update, we are aware that two Kenyan families have evacuated their homes as a result of the wildfires,” the statement read. “While no additional evacuations have been reported, we urge all Kenyans to closely monitor updates from local authorities and follow evacuation instructions as needed.”
The Consulate further encouraged anyone with relatives affected by the fires to reach out to the consulate for assistance at cg@kenyanconsulata.go.ke.
This update comes shortly after Kenyan journalist Mukurima X Muriuki voiced concerns on social media about the lack of communication from the Consulate regarding the situation. Muriuki, who raised his concerns on January 11, posted, “There is a Kenyan consulate in Los Angeles but zero communication from his office. Not that it matters, but you never know.”
As of Sunday, January 12, the wildfires have caused significant destruction in the Los Angeles area, with at least 16 confirmed fatalities and billions of dollars in damages. Approximately 100,000 people, including the two Kenyan families, have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the fires, which are fueled by strong winds and challenging weather conditions.
The Kenyan Consulate has not reported any deaths of Kenyans in the U.S. in connection with the fires. According to U.S. Census Bureau data, about 2,000 Kenyans reside in Los Angeles County.
In response to the devastation, President William Ruto of Kenya extended his condolences, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and with all the people of the United States of America as they rally to the aid of their compatriots. We trust that the indomitable spirit of the American people, anchored in the powerful values that we share, will inspire them with the resilience and determination to recover from the tragedy and emerge even stronger in days to come.”
The Consulate continues to closely monitor the situation and urges all Kenyans in the area to stay safe and informed as the fires continue to pose a significant threat.
