The African Talent University (TATU) in Kisumu has marked a major milestone by graduating its first cohort of 89 students, including eight learners who earned qualifications through the institution’s Special Talent Programme.
Speaking during the graduation ceremony, the university’s founder, Professor Humphrey Obora said the institution is committed to talent-based learning, innovation, and practical skills development aimed at preparing graduates for the evolving job market.
Prof. Obora revealed that future graduates will be required to develop prototypes, innovations, and practical designs as part of their academic assessment, a move he said would strengthen creativity and entrepreneurship among learners.
Among the pioneer graduates was celebrated Ohangla musician Prince Indah, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Innovation and Entrepreneurship under the university’s Special Talent category.
Speaking after receiving his degree, Prince Indah described the institution as unique in its approach to recognizing and nurturing talent. He encouraged talented Kenyans to enroll and pursue academic qualifications alongside their creative and professional careers.
Film producer David Otieno Anguka, who also graduated through the Special Talent Programme, termed the achievement a significant milestone in his career and a testament to the value of integrating talent with formal education.
The graduation comes barely two months after the university received a Letter of Interim Authority from the Ministry of Education, allowing it to admit students, offer academic programmes, and award qualifications as it works towards full accreditation.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the government’s approval of the institution reflects its commitment to expanding access to higher education, innovation, and skills development across the country.
Prof. Obora welcomed the achievement, describing it as the culmination of a journey spanning more than two decades.
He noted that the recognition marks the birth of Africa’s first university dedicated exclusively to talent-based learning, opening new opportunities for artists, innovators, athletes, and other talented individuals to acquire academic qualifications while advancing their careers.
He expressed confidence that the institution would play a transformative role in redefining higher education by placing talent, creativity, and innovation at the center of learning and development.
