Raila Odinga to Shift Focus to African Union Leadership, Steps Back from Kenyan Politics

In a significant political development, opposition leader Raila Odinga has announced his decision to step down from active Kenyan politics to focus on his campaign for the position of African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson. This move signals a shift in Raila’s political career as he transitions from national to continental leadership.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Raila confirmed that his primary focus moving forward will be on continental politics. “I will no longer be very active in Kenyan politics, as I now shift my attention to the African campaign,” Raila stated. However, he assured his supporters that Kenya would remain his base, clarifying that his transition to continental politics would not diminish his connection to the country.

Raila’s decision comes at a critical time for the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition, which is currently navigating internal differences. Recent moves by key Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders to join President William Ruto’s government have put pressure on Raila to hand over leadership of the opposition to Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Despite this internal pressure, Raila’s focus is now firmly set on advocating for Africa’s development through the African Union. In his manifesto, Raila outlines key priorities for the continent, including enhanced African integration, infrastructure development, economic transformation, increased inter-Africa trade, climate action, and youth empowerment.

“United, Africa can have a stronger voice on the global stage. We need to create an environment conducive to growth in areas such as health, education, and employment,” Raila remarked. He also stressed the importance of Africa coming together to address shared challenges.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi voiced strong support for Raila’s campaign, emphasizing Kenya’s confidence in his candidacy for the AUC chairperson position. Mudavadi stated, “This is a national mission. Raila has the credentials and experience to represent Africa’s interests globally. We urge all Kenyans to unite in support of his candidacy.”

The election for the AUC chairperson will take place in January 2025. Raila will compete against candidates from Djibouti, Mauritius, and Madagascar, with Kenya expressing full confidence in his ability to secure the position.

Mudavadi concluded by calling on Kenyans to set aside political differences and rally behind Raila as he campaigns for this pivotal African leadership role.
