A major milestone has been achieved following the initiative by Suna West Member of Parliament, Hon. Peter Masara, to transform Migori Teachers Training College (MTTC) into a constituent college of Rongo University.
The proposal, a long-cherished dream for many residents, quickly gained widespread support.
Hundreds of community members appended their signatures to a petition, which was then forwarded to President William Ruto.
Thanks to the overwhelming local backing, the proposal received a warm reception, fast-tracking the lobbying efforts necessary to bring the idea to fruition.
As part of the transition, Migori TTC will relocate to Nyabisawa Girls Secondary School, which has been identified as its new home.
In a spirit of cooperation, Hon. Masara collaborated with Suna East MP Hon. Junet Mohamed to facilitate the allocation of funds for the purchase of land and the full equipping of the three institutions: Migori TTC, the new University campus, and Nyabisawa High School.
With strong support from his constituents and key education stakeholders, Hon. Masara presented the proposal to the Migori TTC Board of Management.
The board unanimously endorsed the plan, recognizing that establishing a university was an overdue step toward fulfilling the region’s educational aspirations.
The Board also agreed to allocate resources to enhance Nyabisawa’s facilities to meet the standards required for training teachers.
During the 35th graduation ceremony of Migori TTC, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Hon. John Mbadi pledged his office’s support in mobilizing resources to ensure the successful establishment of the new campus.
A series of strategic meetings followed between Hon. Masara, Prof. Samuel Gudu (Vice-Chancellor of Rongo University), Prof. Wilson Otenga, and Mr. Michael Ogutu (Chairman of Migori TTC).

Their discussions focused on the development of Migori Campus, with a shared vision of eventually transforming it into a fully-fledged Migori University.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to expanding access to higher education and enhancing academic standards in Suna West and Migori County.
The establishment of the university promises to unlock numerous opportunities for academic advancement and socio-economic growth, not only for Migori Town but for the nation at large.
The university will launch with Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Business Studies degree programs, scheduled to begin in the May 2025 intake.
Meanwhile, the community is encouraged to support the new campus by ensuring that learners enroll when operations commence this September at Migori TTC.
