November 27, 2024 – Dr. Wilfred Mutubwa, a prominent lawyer and Dean of the School of Law at Mount Kenya University, has passed away. Dr. Mutubwa collapsed in his Nairobi office on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, after complaining of pain. The cause of his death is yet to be determined, with family and friends still awaiting further information.
At the time of his collapse, Dr. Mutubwa was attending a virtual court session in his office near Nairobi Hospital. During a brief break, he suddenly fell ill and collapsed. He was rushed to a nearby medical facility but was unfortunately declared dead.
Dr. Mutubwa was a well-respected figure in the Kenyan legal community. He was not only a dedicated lawyer but also an academic leader, having served as the Dean of the Mount Kenya University School of Law.
His contributions to the field of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) were significant, having previously served as Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators – Kenya.
He was actively involved in the ongoing dispute at Nairobi Hospital and was working to resolve the matter when he passed away.
The Law Society of Kenya president, Faith Odhiambo, expressed deep sorrow at the loss of Dr. Mutubwa. “The legal profession has lost a distinguished member. Dr. Mutubwa’s career was a testament to excellence in both practice and academia. His efforts in advancing ADR in Kenya were groundbreaking, earning him a place at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague,” she said.
“His leadership at MKU School of Law helped to shape the future of many young lawyers, and his contributions will be remembered.”
Dr. Mutubwa’s colleagues and friends mourn the loss of a dedicated and hardworking professional, whose influence on the legal profession will not be forgotten. His commitment to mentorship, justice, and growth in ADR has left a lasting impact.
The body of Dr. Mutubwa has been moved to the mortuary for autopsy and further procedures.
The Mount Kenya University fraternity also mourns the loss of their beloved dean and academic leader.
In another unrelated incident, police are investigating the death of Dr. Jairus Omuteche, a lecturer at Masinde Muliro University, whose body was discovered in a river in Vihiga County.
Dr. Omuteche had been reported missing on Saturday, November 23, 2024, and his body was found three days later in River Jordan, located 15 kilometers from the point where he was last seen.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of his death, whether it was due to drowning or foul play. The body has been moved to a local mortuary pending autopsy and investigation.
