Faith Kipyegon has been feted as the sports personality of the month for the second time by the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK).
This was after her stellar performances in June that saw her break two world records in one week.
Kipyegon shuttered the women’s 1500m record before bagging yet another record one week later in the 5000m race to become the only athlete in the country to achieve such a milestone.
“I am happy and overwhelmed by the way my country has celebrated my two victories. I want to thank SJAK for awarding me once again and it really motivates me in a big way,” said Kipyegon.
The two-time Olympic champion clocked a time of 3:48.11 to set a new 1500m world record in Florence Diamond League and 13:05.20 at the Paris Diamond League thereby setting a new 5000m women’s world record.
Kipyegon clearly expressed her intentions of being determined to defend her title in the race as athletes head to the forthcoming world championship competition in Budapest where she will represent Kenya.
“I hope for the best as I travel for the trials which will be taking place at Nyayo stadium in Nairobi, I believe that more is still in store for me and the people who believe in me,” added Kipyegon
According to James Waindi the president of the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya(SJAK), Faith emerged at the top of other sports personalities like rally driver Carl Tundo who represented Kenya in the world rally championship in Naivasha
“As a team, we want to make the awards annual and to celebrate the winners in a big way, this will not only make them feel appreciated but also motivate them to work extra hard”, said Waindi
