Otieno Oyoo eyes National Rugby Championship after a controversial win against Nyabondo Boys High School

Otieno Oyoo Boys High School rugby team has emerged victorious in the ongoing Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) county games, securing their spot in the highly anticipated regional championships.

The team delivered a stunning performance, defeating Maseno School that came second, with a convincing score of 21-5 in the county finals.

Both Otieno Oyoo and Maseno School will proceed to represent Kisumu County at the regional level, where they will face off against top-tier teams from across the Nyanza region.

However, it is Otieno Oyoo that takes the lead, showing strong confidence and determination as they eye a path to the national championships.

Otieno Oyoo’s journey to the finals came after a controversial appeal against Nyabondo Boys High School.

The appeal, filed by Otieno Oyoo’s team, accused Nyabondo of fielding ineligible players—commonly referred to as “Arturs”—allegedly individuals who are not bona fide students.

After a formal hearing, Nyabondo was found guilty and subsequently disqualified, allowing Otieno Oyoo to advance to the finals uncontested.

Speaking after the win, Otieno Oyoo High School Principal, Mr. Boaz Adit, expressed his pride and optimism:

“We are very optimistic and confident with our team, and we are looking forward to the National Games.”

Maseno School, though finishing second, remains equally determined as they prepare for the regional stage.

The school’s principal, Mr. Peter Owino, shared his thoughts with KTMN: “Our boys have worked hard, and we are confident they will perform well at the regional games.

“In the girls’ category, Nyakach Girls and Sigoti Complex will represent Kisumu County in the regional rugby championships.

With the regionals on the horizon, all eyes will be on Otieno Oyoo and Maseno School as they aim to dominate the Nyanza region and advance to the coveted National Games stage.
