Behind the walls of State House, an unelected figure wields immense influence over Kenya’s political landscape.
Farouk Kibet, President William Ruto’s longtime personal aide, has cemented his role as a kingmaker, deciding who gets access to power—and who doesn’t.
Despite having no formal government position, Kibet’s authority is unquestioned. He is Ruto’s gatekeeper, controlling messaging, political appointments, and even speaking slots at presidential events.
His influence has drawn admiration from allies and resentment from those sidelined, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who openly accused Kibet of undermining his authority before his ouster.
The Man Behind the Throne
Kibet’s rise to prominence dates back to Ruto’s early political days in the 1990s. Over the years, he has evolved from a behind-the-scenes strategist to a de facto power broker.
His role became more pronounced after Ruto’s election as president, with reports indicating that even high-ranking officials—including Cabinet Secretaries and MPs—must go through Kibet to reach the head of state.
Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro once remarked: “Farouk’s office is the Office of the President. You cannot access Ruto if Farouk says no.” Similar sentiments have been echoed by political insiders, reinforcing the notion that Kibet is not just an aide but an enforcer of Ruto’s inner circle.
A Shadowy Figure With Unchecked Influence
Kibet’s influence extends beyond politics. He is said to control event logistics, dictate political narratives, and even decide which politicians speak at public rallies. Recently, a video surfaced of him cutting off Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan mid-speech, directing the microphone to an MP instead. This public display of authority reaffirmed his status as Ruto’s ultimate fixer.
However, critics argue that his unchecked power is a threat to democratic governance. Gachagua, once a close ally, claimed that Kibet created friction between him and Ruto. “Even his personal assistant wants to order me around. I am elected by the people, not by friends of the president,” Gachagua lamented before his impeachment last year.
From Scandal to Survival
Kibet’s name has surfaced in multiple controversies, including the infamous National Youth Service (NYS) scandal, where he was alleged to have received funds from suspects. His name was also mentioned in the 2007 post-election violence investigations by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Despite these allegations, Kibet has remained untouchable, proving his resilience in Kenya’s murky political waters.
The Future of Kenya’s Most Powerful Aide
As Ruto’s presidency advances, Kibet’s role is expected to grow even stronger. With upcoming elections and ongoing political realignments, he remains a key player in shaping Kenya’s governance. Whether he is a stabilizing force or a behind-the-scenes manipulator depends on who you ask—but one thing is certain: in the corridors of power, Farouk Kibet is a name that commands both fear and respect.
