Kalonzo Musyoka’s Rising Profile Fuels Speculation of New Political Coalition as he seeks to fill Raila’s void

A viral song by popular artist Hezeh Ndung’u has cast the spotlight on Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, whose recent moves hint at a potential shift in Kenya’s political alliances.

The song, which praises Kalonzo’s character, gained attention after he and his allies in Parliament supported former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during recent impeachment proceedings.

This move has spurred speculation about a potential alliance between Kalonzo and Gachagua even as the former vice president poses to take over the opposition mantle from Azimio Chief Raila Odinga who has since shifted focus to his AUC chairmanship bid.

The discussion around Kalonzo’s political future has intensified as Wiper allies, including Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa, announced plans to leave the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition.

While Wamalwa and others appear poised for a new coalition, Kalonzo has been more cautious, citing his party’s investment in Azimio.

“Don’t bury Azimio before it’s dead and buried,” Kalonzo remarked. “If we form a new coalition, it may still incorporate Azimio.”

A Balancing Act Between Old Alliances and New Paths

Kalonzo’s ties to Azimio and its leader, Raila Odinga, have been both a support and a challenge.

Having backed Raila in three consecutive presidential races, Kalonzo now stands at a political crossroads. Observers wonder if Raila will endorse Kalonzo’s 2027 presidential aspirations, particularly as Raila pursues the African Union Commission chair.

Despite ongoing cooperation, the ODM party’s recent alignment with Ruto’s UDA coalition has added uncertainty.

Political analysts suggest that Kalonzo could solidify his position as Ruto’s primary opponent if Raila steps aside. Professor Macharia Munene, in a recent opinion piece, noted that Kalonzo could gain traction by distinguishing himself from Ruto and addressing Kenya’s pressing social and economic challenges.

Building Momentum for Change

Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi, a key member of the Wiper party, recently affirmed Kalonzo’s growing leadership role within Azimio, citing his recent visits to counties across Kenya as evidence of his commitment to addressing national issues.

“This is like the River Nile, where we will bring on board anyone who can help us move forward,” Mwangangi said, hinting at the potential formation of a new coalition.

As Kalonzo continues to strengthen his public engagements, he has gained attention for critiquing the government’s policies and setting the stage for a viable opposition.

Whether his political path leads to a fresh coalition or a revitalized Azimio, Kalonzo’s actions have set the stage for significant political shifts in the coming months.
