Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s leadership approach has gained attention for its contrast to that of his outspoken predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua.
While Gachagua’s direct and confrontational style often brought him into conflict with colleagues and MPs, Kindiki’s more measured and non-combative demeanor is seen as a welcome change, creating a balanced dynamic within the presidency alongside the assertive leadership of President William Ruto.
Analysts believe Kindiki’s quiet, diplomatic style is well-suited for his role, especially given the contrast it provides with the President’s more forceful approach.
This adaptability may benefit Kindiki, as city based Lawyer Gad Awuonda notes, since his calm and collected personality is likely to foster stability.
Kindiki’s ability to operate without attracting controversy offers the President a reliable partner, free from the disruptions that often accompanied Gachagua’s tenure.
The Balance of Humility and Respect
Kindiki’s temperament has drawn comparisons to former vice presidents like Mwai Kibaki and Daniel arap Moi, both of whom supported their presidents without overshadowing them.
Gad describes Kindiki as a “civilized” leader who thinks carefully before speaking, a trait that enhances his credibility and creates a sense of stability within the administration.
Former Nairobi Town Clerk Philip Kisia also emphasizes Kindiki’s humility, a trait he believes will allow him to bridge political divides, earn respect, and build lasting relationships.
Kisia sees Kindiki as the antithesis of Gachagua, whom he describes as lacking humility and being disconnected from other leaders.
In his view, Kindiki’s approach could foster a more collaborative leadership style, advancing the nation’s long-term goals, such as Vision 2030.
Learning from Past Mistakes
Gachagua’s high-profile struggles, which culminated in his impeachment, are often attributed to his ambitious but divisive political style.
Cabinet colleague Aden Duale suggests that Gachagua’s fall was partly due to his failure to build a network of allies and manage relationships with MPs.
“He was looking for power, but he didn’t have a strategy for dealing with MPs, including those from his Mt. Kenya backyard,” Duale remarked, adding that Gachagua’s unwillingness to “test the waters” before making bold commitments further contributed to his challenges.
By contrast, Kindiki’s careful approach is expected to help him sidestep such pitfalls.
Duale noted that in Kenya’s political landscape, effective leaders often “test the waters” before making decisive moves—allowing them to retreat or adapt as needed.
Analysts Weigh in on Leadership Styles
Mr Gad draws parallels between Gachagua’s blunt, anti-establishment approach and that of leaders like US President Donald Trump.
These leaders, he says, often gain cult-like followings due to their transparency and willingness to challenge the status quo.
However, their bold actions can be polarizing, and their words are frequently subject to misinterpretation.
Gachagua’s outspoken advocacy for Mt. Kenya’s interests and his unfiltered communication style created friction, but his unapologetic stance won him loyalty from his base.
He suggests that while such leaders may seek change, they face significant challenges in transforming established systems and are often met with resistance.
Looking Forward
As Deputy President Kindiki continues to solidify his role, his calm demeanor and adaptability are likely to keep him in the good graces of both the President and other government officials.
His leadership style, grounded in humility and mutual respect, positions him as a stabilizing force within Kenya’s political landscape.
