Migori County Commissioner Mr. Kisilu Mutua has called for stringent measures to curb the increasing cases of school fires and student unrest, warning that those found responsible for acts of arson in learning institutions will face the full force of the law.
Speaking during a public engagement forum in the Kuria region, the County Commissioner expressed concern over the recent spate of school infernos reported in various parts of the country, noting that the incidents were threatening the education sector and putting the lives of learners at risk.
Mr. Mutua urged school administrators, teachers, parents and students to work together in addressing the root causes of unrest in schools while strengthening safety and surveillance measures within learning institutions.
“The destruction of school property through arson is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. Schools are centers of learning and should remain safe environments for our children. Anyone found engaging in criminal activities that endanger the lives of learners will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law,” said Mutua.
He directed school management boards to strengthen guidance and counselling programmes, enhance student engagement and ensure early detection of grievances before they escalate into violence and destruction.
The County Commissioner further called upon parents to take a more active role in monitoring the behavior of their children both at home and in school.
“Parents, teachers and community leaders have a collective responsibility to nurture discipline among our young people. We must protect educational institutions because they are critical to the future of our nation,” he added.
Government Intensifies Fight Against Insecurity
Beyond education, Mutua assured residents that the government had intensified efforts to address insecurity and criminal activities in the region.
He acknowledged concerns raised by members of the public regarding incidents of robbery and lawlessness and assured residents that security agencies were implementing strategic interventions aimed at restoring peace and protecting lives and property.
“We are strengthening security operations across the region. Our officers are on high alert and we remain committed to ensuring that every resident lives and conducts business in a secure environment,” he said.
The administrator urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and individuals involved in criminal activities.
Warning Against Corruption
Mutua also reiterated the government’s commitment to fighting corruption, warning public officers against engaging in unethical practices that undermine service delivery.
He said corruption remains one of the greatest obstacles to development and called upon public servants to uphold integrity, accountability and transparency in the execution of their duties.
“Public resources must be used for the benefit of wananchi. Any officer found engaging in corruption or abuse of office will be held accountable,” he warned.
Boost for Education and Skills Development
On education, the County Commissioner revealed plans by the national government to support the establishment and expansion of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in the region to equip young people with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
He noted that the government was also implementing affordable housing initiatives and other development programmes aimed at stimulating economic growth and creating opportunities for local residents.
“Our goal is to ensure that young people acquire relevant skills that will enable them to participate meaningfully in the economy and improve their livelihoods,” he said.
Farmers Receive Avocado and Coffee Seedlings
In agriculture, Mutua disclosed that the government had already distributed more than 15,000 avocado and coffee seedlings to farmers in the region as part of efforts to boost agricultural productivity and increase household incomes.
He assured residents that additional seedlings would be distributed in the coming months to expand farming opportunities and strengthen food security.
“Agriculture remains the backbone of our economy. By supporting farmers with quality seedlings and modern farming practices, we are laying a strong foundation for economic empowerment and sustainable development,” he said.
Crackdown on Dangerous Road Practices
The County Commissioner also raised concern over the rising number of road accidents, particularly those involving overloaded public service vehicles.
He warned operators flouting traffic regulations that security agencies and road safety officers would intensify enforcement measures to safeguard the lives of road users.
“We have witnessed preventable accidents caused by overloading and reckless driving. We will not hesitate to take stern action against those who endanger the lives of innocent citizens,” Mutua warned.
Optimism Amid Economic Challenges
Addressing concerns over the rising cost of fuel and living expenses, Mutua attributed some of the challenges to global economic pressures and international conflicts affecting fuel markets.
However, he expressed optimism that the situation would stabilize as global conditions improve.
“We understand the concerns being raised by wananchi regarding the cost of fuel and other essential commodities. The government continues to monitor the situation and implement measures aimed at cushioning citizens from economic shocks,” he said.
He urged residents to remain united, support government development programmes and continue embracing peaceful coexistence as the country pursues social and economic transformation.
